New Orleans, located in southeastern Louisiana, sits at the mouth of the Mississippi River.
This location made it a pivotal port in American history because it controlled the trade routes to the interior of the country.
August 2005, New Orleans was hit by the Category 5 Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest in U.S. history, which flooded the city, causing millions of dollars in damages and thousands of people to be displaced from their homes.
Since then, the city has been working to rebuild its battered infrastructure and economy.
